Medical Student’s Death Case Takes a Fresh Turn After 15 Months
A year after the death of 19-year-old medical student Syed Sultan Zafar, authorities have exhumed his body from Karachi’s Kohi Goth Cemetery in an effort to determine how he actually died.
The court-ordered exhumation has reopened questions surrounding the circumstances of Zafar’s death, which his family has questioned from the beginning. While the initial account described the incident as an accident, the family has maintained that the young medical student may have been killed and has demanded a transparent investigation.
The latest forensic examination could provide crucial evidence as investigators attempt to establish whether Zafar died as a result of an accidental fall or whether there was another cause behind his death.
Medical Student Died After Alleged Accident
Syed Sultan Zafar was reportedly injured in an incident near Karachi’s Do Darya area on July 23, 2025.
According to the initial account recorded by police, Zafar was travelling with friends when he allegedly fell from the trunk of a moving car. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at around 20 kilometres per hour when the medical student fell and suffered a serious head injury.
He was taken to hospital for treatment but died several days later on July 30, 2025.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, however, remained disputed.
Zafar’s family did not accept the accident theory and sought a more detailed investigation into what had happened before his death. The case was subsequently registered on the complaint of his mother under Section 320 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to death caused by a rash or negligent act.
The legal proceedings eventually resulted in a court order for the exhumation of his body.
Court Orders Exhumation at Kohi Goth Cemetery
The grave of Sultan Zafar was opened at the Kohi Goth Cemetery in Karachi under the court’s direction.
A special medical board was constituted to oversee the process, with Professor of Radiology Dr Saba Sohail leading the team. Police surgeons, forensic specialists, neurosurgeons and medico-legal officials were also involved in the examination.
The purpose of the exhumation was not simply to reopen the case but to obtain physical and forensic evidence that could help investigators determine the actual cause of death.
During the procedure, the medical team collected different samples from the deceased’s remains and preserved them for laboratory examination. Photographs of the body were also taken from different angles to assist the forensic investigation.
Officials have stressed that no final conclusion can be reached until the collected samples are analysed.
Family Continues to Question Death
The exhumation comes after more than a year of uncertainty for Zafar’s family.
His relatives have consistently questioned the circumstances surrounding his death and have demanded that investigators establish what actually happened on the night of the incident.
The family’s concerns have made the case more complicated than a routine accidental-death investigation.
Their position is that the circumstances surrounding Zafar’s injuries require further examination before the incident can be conclusively described as an accident.
The exhumation therefore represents an important stage in their effort to seek answers and establish whether there was any criminal element involved.
What the Medical Examination Could Reveal
Forensic examination after exhumation can help investigators reassess injuries and other evidence that may not have been fully explained during the original investigation.
In Zafar’s case, the medical board has collected samples that will now undergo laboratory analysis. The findings could potentially help investigators understand the nature of the injuries and determine whether they are consistent with the reported circumstances.
However, authorities have not yet announced a final conclusion about whether the death was accidental or the result of a criminal act.
The evidence will have to be examined carefully before investigators can make a definitive determination.
This distinction is particularly important because the family has raised allegations of foul play, while the original police account was based on an alleged accidental fall from a moving vehicle.
Sultan Zafar Came From a Medical Family
Sultan Zafar was himself a medical student and belonged to a prominent medical family.
He was the maternal grandson of renowned doctors Professor Syed Tipu Sultan and Professor Dr Sher Shah Syed.
His death at the age of just 19 therefore attracted significant attention, particularly because of the unanswered questions surrounding the incident.
Following his death, his mother, Dr Mehr Afroze, donated his organs, including his kidneys, according to reports.
The organ donation added another emotional dimension to the tragedy, as the family chose to help other patients even while dealing with the loss of their young son.
Investigation Now Enters a Critical Stage
With the exhumation completed, investigators are now waiting for the forensic and laboratory findings.
The medical board’s analysis could become a key part of the investigation and may help authorities determine whether the injuries and other evidence support the original accident theory.
If the forensic evidence points to inconsistencies, investigators could potentially revisit different aspects of the case. If the evidence supports the original account, it could strengthen the conclusion that Zafar’s death resulted from an accident.
At this stage, however, it would be premature to declare either theory proven.
Police and medical authorities are expected to rely on the laboratory results and forensic findings before reaching a final conclusion.
A Search for Answers After 15 Months
The exhumation has brought Sultan Zafar’s case back into focus more than a year after his death.
For his family, the process is an attempt to finally answer the questions that have remained unresolved since July 2025.
The key question remains whether the young medical student died after an unfortunate accident or whether circumstances surrounding his death were more complicated than initially reported.
With samples now secured and forensic analysis underway, the next stage of the investigation could prove crucial.
Until the medical board completes its examination and authorities review the laboratory results, the exact cause and circumstances of Sultan Zafar’s death remain under investigation.
